I was a product of the traditional knowledge-based curriculum. Therefore, I particularly appreciate how students acquire knowledge and skills through a concept-based curriculum within contexts. Students have the opportunity to explore real-life situations and issues through the inquiry cycle, which inspires them to look beyond textbooks and conventional curricula for understanding and meaning. Meanwhile, through their involvement with communities, within the school or beyond, students establish their identity and develop empathy and respect. As an educator, I aspire to bring students, teachers, parents, and community partners together to see if they are interested in making changes and foster the skill of empathy.
I write to share a repertoire of strategies and the benefits of integrating technology to leverage teaching and learning and maximize productivity. The question that guides my thinking is “How does this help learning?’ for both students and adult learners. The learning process should be intentional, purposeful, meaningful, and contextualized. I am aware of my assumptions and flexible to learn, relearn, and unlearn. While exploring pedagogical frameworks, I consolidate my thinking through visual diagrams and infographic posters. Pedagogical frameworks help establish a shared vision, foster psychological safety, allow experimentation, and promote collaboration.
My research focuses on the development of self-regulated learners and creating an environment conducive to learning. Self-regulation is an essential skill for students to develop because it helps them manage their behavior, emotions, goals, and learning processes. It is important to discuss ‘power’ when facilitating learning if we genuinely aim to build self-regulation. Learning how to learn every day, adapting to a rapidly changing world, anticipating problems, and leading initiative to solve them is essential to preparing students for the VUCA (Volatile, Uncertainty, Complexity, Ambiguity)world. By engaging in self-directed learning, students are provided with strategies, given opportunities to exercise their agency, identify their strengths and weaknesses, and develop the skills needed for adulthood. Moreover, self-regulation is a life skill that is related to a range of positive outcomes such as better social skills, mental health, and overall well being.
Below is my personal manifesto, which outlines my values, beliefs, and goals. My work and life are guided by these principles.
