Chinese Compound Sentences 中文複句

To support students writing their academic reports, I compiled a list of writing strategies and sentence starters to help them write about their experience and cite evidence or use examples to explain further, 4 Report Writing Strategies & Sentence Starters. As I finished this, I felt that students who study Mandarin as a second language and mother tongue could also benefit from a clear list of common Chinese compound sentence structures. Therefore, I asked if any Chinese teachers were interested in collaboratively compiling this list for Chinese language learners. Special thanks to the following Mandarin teachers who contributed to the list. We had fun meeting each other via Zoom and discussing how to best support our students.

  • Chi-Shan Wu
  • Lea Huang
  • Fiona Kuo
  • Annelora Lavender
  • Victoria Lo

Due to the distinctive linguistic features and usage, it was not easy to create sentence starters for Mandarin. We shifted our focus and compiled a list of common compound sentence patterns. A compound sentence, just like the name suggests, is composed of two (or more) sentences joined together by a conjunction or coordinating conjunctions. They can use words or phrases such as not only…but also, both, neither, and so on, and often require more than one sentence to translate into English word-for-word. Chinese compound sentences play an important role in Chinese language and communication skills, so it’s important to learn how to write them properly.
